I Tried AI for a Week as a Project Manager. Here Is What Changed.

A senior PM tested AI tools across every part of his workflow. The time savings were bigger than he expected.

# I Tried AI for a Week as a Project Manager. Here Is What Changed. I manage a 12-person software development team. My week is a constant stream of status updates, stakeholder emails, risk assessments, and meeting summaries. I spend maybe 30% of my time on actual project strategy. The rest is communication overhead. I decided to test AI tools across every part of my workflow for one week. ## The Status Report Test I described the project status in bullet points and asked Claude to write a stakeholder update email. It produced a professional, clear email in 30 seconds that would have taken me 20 minutes. I edited it slightly and sent it. Nobody noticed the difference. ## The Meeting Summary Test I used Otter.ai to transcribe a 60-minute team meeting, then pasted the transcript into Claude and asked for a summary with action items, owners, and deadlines. The result was accurate and well-organized. This alone saved me 30 minutes per meeting. ## The Risk Assessment Test I described a project scenario and asked Claude to identify potential risks and suggest mitigation strategies. It surfaced three risks I had not explicitly considered. Not all were relevant, but the exercise was valuable. ## The Honest Verdict AI saved me approximately 8 hours that week. That is 8 hours I redirected to actual project strategy, team development, and stakeholder relationships. The quality of my work improved because I was less buried in administrative tasks.
